City of Toronto: Transform TO

Project Overview:

The City of Toronto’s TransformTO initiative is a critical framework aimed at achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. As part of this vision, the City required clear, engaging, and accessible materials to communicate its strategies and progress. KIMBO Design Inc. was engaged to design a suite of infographics and graphics to support the initiative’s key messaging and ensure alignment with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) guidelines.

The Challenge:

A key requirement was ensuring all materials met strict Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) standards. This included integrating ALT text, using compliant color contrasts, and designing for inclusivity across diverse audiences.

Another challenge involved adhering to the City of Toronto’s branding and text guidelines. The designs needed to maintain a consistent visual identity that aligned with the City’s established standards.

Communicating complex data was equally critical. Topics like carbon budgets and multi-year planning required clear, engaging visuals to simplify intricate concepts for stakeholders and the public.

Finally, scalability posed a design challenge. The graphics had to perform seamlessly across various platforms and work on both white and black backgrounds, ensuring flexibility and accessibility in all applications.

The Strategy:

KIMBO’s approach was both innovative and collaborative. We developed seven custom graphics and eight icons to simplify concepts like the “Annual Carbon Budget Prioritization Process” and “Net-Zero Emission Budgets.” The team focused on visually prioritizing the most critical information, such as the “5 Critical Steps” for climate resilience. They ensured all materials complied with AODA standards, including ALT text and color schemes that optimized readability on contrasting backgrounds. Additionally, they maintained a consistent visual language aligned with the City of Toronto’s branding, ensuring professionalism and recognition.

Results

The final infographic was AODA-compliant, enhancing accessibility. It effectively distilled complex information, received positive feedback for its clarity and professionalism, and empowered the City to present a clear roadmap toward net-zero emissions, fostering community engagement and accountability.
