Ministry of Energy and Climate Solutions: The 2024 Climate Change Accountability Report

Project Overview

The 2024 Climate Change Accountability Report (CCAR) is a pivotal document outlining British Columbia’s progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and its road toward the 2030 targets under the CleanBC initiative. This report serves as a critical communication tool for the Ministry of Energy and Climate Solutions, designed to ensure transparency, inform strategic decisions, and engage the public on the province’s climate action and resilience efforts.

  • Brand Guidelines Implementation
  • Narrative Design & Content Structuring
  • Visual Hierarchy Creation

The Challenge

The core challenge for this project was to transform complex climate data, policy details, and economic projections into a digestible and engaging visual narrative. Since we wanted to maintain a format that is visually appealing, informative and accessible, we required a graphic design approach capable of translating dense, often technical content.

Key priorities included overcoming the inherent dryness of accountability reporting, maintaining consistent provincial and CleanBC branding, and ensuring the report’s design adhered to readability and digital accessibility standards.

Adding to the complexity, KIMBO received report content in small pieces. Working with fragmented and evolving information made it challenging to finalize layouts and obtain timely approvals for infographics. As new information became available, we had to adapt the report structure and visuals to accommodate changes.

The Strategy

Our design strategy focused on several key areas to achieve maximum clarity and impact: data visualization, intuitive layout, cohesive brand and tone, and accessibility.

The foundation of the report was based on a clean, modular grid system, ensuring a highly organized and visually appealing structure. We made thoughtful use of white space, consistent typography, and clear visual cues to guide readers seamlessly through the document, preventing information overload.

The 2024 Climate Change Accountability Report – Creative Process

We developed custom infographics, charts, and graphs that simplified intricate datasets, highlighting crucial trends and making quantitative information immediately understandable. This involved intuitive scaling, precise labelling, and a strategic application of the CleanBC colour palette to emphasize critical insights. As additional information and direction were provided by the ministry, we remained flexible, refining and adapting the report to ensure its alignment with evolving requirements.

The 2024 Climate Change Accountability Report Infographic Progression

Throughout the layout and visualizations, we seamlessly integrated the visual identities of both the Government of British Columbia and the CleanBC initiative, creating a unified and authoritative aesthetic. The chosen colour palette and imagery conveyed both the urgency of climate action and the optimism of B.C.’s innovative solutions, fostering trust and encouraging public engagement.

Every design detail, from font selection and size to colour contrast and navigation adhered to BC’s accessibility standards, ensured the report was inclusive and usable by all British Columbians.

Results

KIMBO’s ability to design valuable tools for all stakeholders has made the 2024 CCAR a widely used and recognized resource among government officials. By applying a clear narrative structure and visual design principles, KIMBO improved its accessibility, making complex data and policy details easier to understand. This more engaging approach has enhanced government transparency, helping build public trust and attention to the Ministry’s climate progress, challenges, and future goals.
